ILA: Airport's general aviation terminal gets a makeover

Source: flightglobal.com

Berlin may be building one of the most modern passenger terminals in Europe, but Schönefeld airport's general aviation facilities are also getting a makeover.

As the huge Berlin Brandenburg International structure takes shape next to the show site, ExecuJet is preparing to revamp the small general aviation terminal, next to its fixed-base operation in the Lufthansa Bombardier Aviation Services (LBAS) building - a business in which the Swiss services firm is a partner.

ExecuJet was selected earlier this year by Berlin Airports to operate the GA terminal. The facility, which provides the only airside access for passengers other than through the passenger terminal, has a reception area, security gate and lounge.

Although ExecuJet will staff the terminal, it will be branded separately from ExecuJet's adjoining FBO, which has its own entrance, reception area, lounges and pilot facilities. ExecuJet's general manager Germany Tobia Laps says ensuring the two businesses retain their own identity is a "fine line", but that ExecuJet is "comfortable" offering services to operators who might be using its competitors' handling services.

The current show site is being demolished to make way for the new airport - ILA will relocate to a purpose-built fair ground 2km (1.2 miles) away from 2012 - but existing permanent structures, including LBAS, the GA terminal and other maintenance hangars, will remain at least until 2020.
