Aviation News Item: 00835 30th Mar 2009 FAA wants to keep bird strike details under its wings Source: ubmaviationnews.com The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is trying to resist media pressure to publish its database on bird strike incidents under the Freedom of Information Act. Last week, the authority filed a proposal with the federal government not to disclose these records, because the details might lead the public to make inaccurate comparisons between individual airlines and airports. Since reporting on bird strike incidents is currently just a voluntarily procedure and some airlines and airports are more committed than others, the data will not provide a clear picture, according to the FAA. Furthermore, publishing the database might discourage participants to continue to submit reports. The National Transportation Safety Board recommended in 1999 to make these reports mandatory, and is now arguing the FAA is trying to protect commercial interests of the airlines and airports at the expense of safety. |
