The 38 Eurocontrol member states have committed €700m to the "Single European Sky Air Traffic Management Research" (SESAR) programme today. The scheme involves 16 public and private organisations that are planning to create an aviation system which, by 2020, aims to improve safety by a factor of ten, enable a threefold increase in capacity, reduce the environmental impact per flight by 10 per cent, and cut costs by 50 per cent.
On the other side of the Atlantic, the US NextGen Institute, a venture between the National Center for Advanced Technologies and the FAA, has awarded a Raytheon-led team a $2.3m, seven-month contract to study the next-gen integrated communications, navigation and surveillance (ICNS) architecture and determine the national airspace system's needs for 2018 to 2025. The study analyses ICNS interfaces to operator flight planning systems, aircraft capabilities, avionics functions and FAA automation systems. The team also includes Rockwell Collins, ARINC, Aviation Management Associates and Thales.
