U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Detroit medically evacuated a 53-year-old crewmember from a 624-foot bulk freighter located in southern Lake Huron north of Harbor Beach, Mich., Monday, at approximately 3 p.m.
The HH-65C rescue helicopter from Detroit deployed rescue swimmer Aviation Survival Technician 2nd Class Brett Fogle down to the Canadian-flagged Ojibway. Petty Officer Fogle quickly assessed the patient, and the man was hoisted to the helicopter in the rescue basket. He was administered oxygen during the medical transfer to Huron Medical Center in Badaxe, Mich.
The U.S. Coast Guard was notified by the Canadian Coast Guard, based in Sarnia, after the captain of the Ojibway notified them he had a crewmember experiencing chest pains since 6 a.m. Monday. The U.S. Coast Guard worked closely with the Canadian Coast Guard to provide safe transport of the crewman.
