Aviation News Item: 00702 2nd Jun 2009 Near-miss runway incident at Mumbai International Source: ubmaviationnews.com Two passenger aircraft aborted their take-off rolls to avoid a collision at Mumbai International airport last Sunday, May 31, at 7:55am (local time). A Jet Airways flight heading for Kolkata with an estimated 116 people onboard was cleared for take-off on runway 14 while an Air India aircraft on the intersecting runway 27, which had been cleared to line up on the west-bound runway according to media reports, also initiated its take-off roll. Air traffic control instructed the Air India flight crew to abort the take-off, an action also followed by the Jet Airways pilots who were monitoring the same ATC frequency. The Air India aircraft was an A310 (based on timetable information) bound for Shanghai and had an estimated 108 onboard. While the Jet Airways pilots have been cleared of responsibility by the Indian Directorate General of Civil Aviation, the two Air India pilots have been taken off duty until the end of the investigation into the incident. |
