Aviation News Item: 00639 18th Jun 2009 Airbus and IAI to explore 'engines-off' taxiing Source: ubmaviationnews.com Airbus and Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) have signed a MoU to jointly explore the application of IAI's proposed "Taxibot" concept - a tow-bar-less tractor for towing operations under pilot control. The aim is to completely remove the need to turn on the aircraft's main engines during taxi, although the aircraft's auxiliary power unit (APU) would need to be activated in order to supply power to cockpit and cabin systems. The two firms are planning ground tests using one Airbus-owned A340-600 test aircraft. |
