Aviation News Item: 00582 3rd Jul 2009 Formal complaint over air traffic safety maintenance at Spanish airports Source: ubmaviationnews.com The Federation of Independent Aeronautical Unions, the FSAI, has made a formal complaint to the AESA Spanish Air Safety Agency over their concerns at a lack of sufficient engineering cover at airport control towers in Spain. The FSAI had previously highlighted concerns at the situation at Malaga Airport, where a shortage of specialised technicians recently left the control tower without engineering cover on one occasion and, on another, led to one technician working 17 hours without a break. ATSEP (air traffic safety electronics personnel) technicians and engineers are responsible for supervising and maintaining the technical systems used in airport control towers for air navigation services. The union says that leaving air traffic control without ATSEP cover contravenes legislation and could constitute a risk to operational safety at the airports affected. They claim the Development Ministry, which has responsibility for the sector, has failed to take any measures to address the situation. |
