Aviation News Item: 00573 7th Jul 2009 Engineers union accuses CASA of covering up maintenance lapses at Qantas Source: ubmaviationnews.com The Australian Licensed Aircraft Engineers Association has accused the nation's Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) of having covered up safety lapses in Qantas maintenance operations, according to newspaper reports. The union claims it wrote to CASA on numerous occasions to enquire about several alleged air legislation breaches, but the authority failed to respond adequately and follow up the allegations. The association cited one incident whereby Qantas deferred mandatory checks on a 767 that had flown through severe turbulence. The Australian flag carrier also reportedly operated a 747 with incorrectly installed engines for one month before the mistake was rectified. CASA has denied the allegations saying that the incidents were examined and accurately followed up. |
