Aviation News Item: 00566 8th Jul 2009 LHT and DLR cooperate on fuel cells in aviation Source: ubmaviationnews.com Lufthansa Technik and the German Aerospace Center (DLR) are planning to intensify their cooperation in the testing of fuel cells for aviation purposes. After the Antares DLR-H2, the worldwide first pilot-controlled aircraft capable of taking off, flying and landing solely on fuel cell power, successfully conducted its official first flight at Hamburg airport yesterday, July 7, DLR will station the experimental fuel cell aircraft at the MRO provider's base in the northern German port city. Instead of using a combustion engine or turbine, the propeller mounted atop the modified Antares 20E motor glider is driven by electricity. The necessary electrical power is produced by 25 kilowatt fuel cell installed in one of two wing-pods. |
