Aviation News Item: 00540 16th Jul 2009 Mechanics union comes to terms with Air Canada Source: ubmaviationnews.com The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers has become the last of the major unions to approve a deal allowing the airline to delay funding its CAD$3bn pension deficit for 21 months. The union represents 12,300 of Air Canada's mechanics, baggage handlers, cargo agents and electricians. It approved the deal by 60.3 per cent. The deal extends the existing labour contract by 21 months, it will help the airline in its bid to avoid entering bankruptcy protection for the second time in six years. The union had been concerned that maintenance and repair jobs could be outsourced. ($1 = CAD$1.22) |
