Aviation News Item: 00536 20th Jul 2009 LFV and SAS test 'green approaches' Source: ubmaviationnews.com Beginning today, Swedish air navigation services providers LFV and SAS are to test the 'green approaches concept' with continuous descent flight patterns throughout Sweden. The test period will be for one week and the aim is to gain information about this technique to cut fuel consumption, carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and noise. The technique was first implemented on a small scale at Stockholm-Arlanda airport in 2006 and has since been refined and developed. Every green approach should reduce CO2 emissions by at least 150kg, according to LFV. SAS is responsible for about 40 per cent of all traffic at Arlanda and aims to reduce its own CO2 emissions by 20 per cent by 2020. LFV has the goal that by 2012 eight out of 10 approaching aircraft will be offered the option of green approaches. "We are also working continuously to straighten out flight routes. Since last spring we are able to offer airlines the straightest route possible over northern Sweden which, when fully implemented by 2011, is expected to reduce annual emissions of carbon dioxide by 17,000 tonnes," says Per Fröberg, LVF's information officer. |
