President Barack Obama has lifted US sanctions on the export of aerospace and IT products to Syria and suggested that more bans might be lifted in the future. Some of these economic restrictions had been in place since the mid-1980s, according to Arab media. In 2004, the US administration imposed further sanctions on the Middle Eastern country for allegedly supporting terrorist activities, the occupation of Lebanon and certain weapons programmes. The agreement to lift certain bans was reached as part of George Mitchell's, the US special envoy to the region, visit to Damascus last weekend.
