Aviation News Item: 00494 30th Jul 2009 DLR and Air Berlin test GBAS at Brunswick Source: ubmaviationnews.com The German Aerospace Centre (DLR) and Air Berlin are to test a ground-based augmentation system (GBAS) for precision approaches using satellite signals, at a new experimental station at Brunswick airport. The GBAS should allow pilots to touch-down accurately in adverse weather conditions or at airports located in areas with an unfavourable topography, such as Innsbruck or the island of Corfu. "The precision of GBAS approaches is impressive and exceeds our expectations," said Marc Altenscheidt, chief of the Boeing fleet at the LCC, on completion of the validation flights for the station. "We are testing this system on our Boeing 737NG fleet with the aim of accelerating its development." |
