Aviation News Item: 00477 5th Aug 2009 FAA certifies Aero-Instruments Pitot tubes for Airbus Source: ubmaviationnews.com The FAA has given parts manufacturer approval (PMA) for the Aero-Instruments' 0851HL-AI Pitot probe as a replacement part on A320-family, A330 and A340 series aircraft. Aero-Instruments is one of only three (including Goodrich and Thales) Pitot tube suppliers for Airbus aircraft. Last week the European airframer recommended operators of A330/A340 aircraft with Thales-made Pitot tubes to replace at least two of the aircraft's three airspeed indication probes with ones made by Goodrich (see UBM Aviation News from July 31, 2009). EASA followed the airframer's move with an AD proposal, which mandates a maximum of one Thales BA type probe to be fitted on the aircraft aside from two Goodrich Pitot tubes. The older Thales probes (type AA) would no longer be fitted. The FAA has thus far not responded with any change in regulation for aircraft certified under its rule. |
