Aviation News Item: 00473 6th Aug 2009 FAA issues AD to modify 767 fuel system Source: ubmaviationnews.com The FAA issued an AD for 767 aircraft, effective September 9, 2009, yesterday, which requires operators to install an automatic shutoff system for the centre tank fuel pumps (auxiliary fuel tank override/jettison fuel pumps) within the next three years. The concern is that the pumps could overheat at low fuel levels, when they are not submerged in fuel, and thus pose a potential ignition source for fuel vapors, which could cause a fuel tank explosion. Until the modification has been completed, flight crew are advised to manually shut off the fuel pumps when the fuel reaches a certain minimum level. Boeing informed 767 operators about the issue through a service bulletin in 2006. |
