Aviation News Item: 00413 21st Aug 2009 Second phase to locate AF A330 flight recorders over - third phase possible Source: ubmaviationnews.com The second phase of the search for the flight data and cockpit voice recorders of the Air France (AF) A330, which crashed in the south Atlantic on June 1, has ended without success, the French Bureau d'Enquetes et d'Analyses (BEA) said yesterday, August 20. Since the end of July search teams have been trying to locate the wreckage on the ocean floor, in roughly an 70km (38nm) radius around the last known position of the aircraft, using sonar equipment. The BEA has said it was now looking at other ways and a possible third phase to locate the wreckage. During the first phase the search teams tried to detect the recorders' locator beacons but abandoned this method on July 10, by the time the transmitter batteries were thought to have run out of energy. |
