Charter Index 2009 Followed a Steady Trend
Source: fly-corporate.com
The Avinode Pricing Index followed a steady trend throughout 2009 with continuously falling charter prices. It was not until the beginning of December that the price decrease stopped and a small price increase of 0.5% was noticed. Overall, pricing on the global air charter market has dropped by approximately 8% since January 1.
In 2009, there was a significant drop in demand after New Year's and a brief recovery during the winter skiing season, before reaching the first peak around Easter /early spring 2009. The Index then dropped rather drastically again before recovering during the summer season, reaching its second peak by the end of June.
The summer season is where the first seasonal irregularity in demand is noticeable, when compared to 2008. The peak was significantly weaker and shorter than the previous year, when the summer trends lasted until the beginning of September.
The second irregularity occurred during October/November; in 2008, the indexes had a peak (the third for that year), but in 2009, it remained steady at fairly low levels. Moving into holiday season, the index rose again, and for the first time during the year, the values were steady at the same levels as experienced in 2008, an effect of the market stabilizing at the same point in time as the market slowed down in 2008.
