Aviation News Item: 00373 2nd Sep 2009 BA receives first A318 with 'steep approach' capability Source: ubmaviationnews.com British Airways (BA) has received the first of two A318s equipped with 'steep approach' capability. The aircraft with CFM 56-5B9/3 engines will be deployed for the twice-daily London City - New York JFK service via Shannon in the Irish Republic, which is due to begin later this month. The aircraft is certified for a 5.5Â approach slope. This compares to a nominal 3Â slope for standard operations. During 'steep approach' certification the aircraft has to demonstrate it can safely achieve a 7.5Â angle, equivalent to the targeted angle plus a 2Â safety margin. The A318 and A318 Elite were approved for 'steep approach' landing capability by EASA in 2007. |
