Aviation News Item: 00338 11th Sep 2009 TSA authorises rollout of ARINC 'CrewPASS' Source: ubmaviationnews.com The US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has authorised ARINC, a Maryland-based company for transportation communications and systems, to proceed with the operational rollout of its 'CrewPASS' electronic identification service for airline crews. The fingerprint-based system is currently in field-testing at Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI), Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT), and Columbia Metropolitan Airport (CAE). Airline crew members must present their company employee badge at a TSA checkpoint and place their index finger on a scanner. The badge number is verified against the airline's database and the fingerprint scan is verified against a separate system database, which is maintained by ARINC partner LexisNexis. 'CrewPASS' is supported by the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) and crewmembers from more than 30 airlines. |
