Aviation News Item: 00258 5th Oct 2009 ITT implements ADS-B in Gulf of Mexico Source: ubmaviationnews.com ITT is implementing automatic dependent surveillance - broadcast (ADS-B) in the Gulf of Mexico. The GPS-based air traffic surveillance system should allow aircraft to use more direct routes and reduce fuel consumption. The Gulf of Mexico is one of the most highly trafficked airspaces in the world, with hundreds of commercial airline flights and more than 600 helicopters operating every day to service 9,000 offshore oil and gas platforms. Currently, radar coverage exists in a very limited area. |
