Aviation News Item: 00251 6th Oct 2009 IATA sets green targets and reiterates need for global approach to aviation industry Source: ubmaviationnews.com The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has set out four main areas for governments around the globe to curb carbon emission from the aviation industry: introduce targets to stabilise and eventually reduce CO2 emissions; manage aviation's carbon emissions through ICAO under a new Kyoto II framework, by treating aviation as a global industrial sector; invest in efficient infrastructure, particularly air traffic management; and establish fiscal and legal frameworks to promote the rapid development of biofuels for aviation. Giovanni Bisignani, IATA's director general and CEO, reiterated that "we need a global sectoral approach to reducing aviation emissions" rather than introduce national targets. IATA aims to improve fuel efficiency 1.5 per cent on average per year through 2020, stabilise emissions with carbon-neutral growth from 2020 and halve emissions by 2050 (compared to 2005). |
