Aviation News Item: 00228 13th Oct 2009 Qatar makes first passenger flight with natural gas fuel blend Source: ubmaviationnews.com A Qatar Airways A340-600 completed the world's first commercial passenger service using fuel partly made from natural gas yesterday (October 12). The Rolls-Royce Trent 556-equipped aircraft flew from London Gatwick to Doha, in the state of Qatar, using a 50:50 blend of synthetic gas to liquids (GTL) kerosene and conventional oil-based kerosene, which was developed and produced by Shell. The state of Qatar plans to produce around one million tonnes per annum of GTL kerosene from 2012 at a facility, the Pearl GTL project, in Doha, which Qatar Petroleum and Shell are currently constructing. GTL Jet Fuel, with GTL kerosene up to 50 per cent, was approved for use in civil aviation by ASTM International (originally known as the American Society for Testing and Materials) in September 2009. |
