REACH Air Medical Services Collaborates in Award-Winning, Life-Saving Effort

 REACH Air Medical Services (REACH) and members of the Corvallis Fire Department, along with the Monroe Rural Fire Protection District were recognized at the 2009 State Emergency Medical Services Awards Banquet in Portland on October 2, 2009 for their exemplary performance of collaborative duties under adverse conditions.
The group received the Unit Citation from the State of Oregon after being nominated for their cooperative and successful extrication of a patient with multiple traumatic amputations from a piece of farm equipment last year.
The mission was particularly complex and multifaceted according to David Brown, EMT-P, Operations Base Manager for REACH. "Each individual played an integral role on the team," Brown said. "They ultimately saved a patient's life because of their ability to work together." The responders worked for more than an hour at an extremely delicate and intense operation to disentangle the patient. REACH Air Medical Services and its team provided on-site medical care and emergency air transportation.
"It is extremely rewarding to be recognized by our peers, and especially for teamwork," Brown said. "REACH is proud of our partnerships with additional responders because they ensure the most effective use of resources and the best patient care."
In addition to REACH Air Medical Services and the Monroe Rural Fire Protection District, the following agencies responded to the incident: Corvallis Fire; Benton County 911 Dispatch; and the Benton County Sheriff's Office. REACH team members receiving the Unit Citation are: Flight Paramedic Samuel Lillie, Flight Nurse Jan Berger, Flight Nurse and Pilot Charlie Jones.
