Aviation News Item: 00182 28th Oct 2009 American likely to end maintenance in Kansas City Source: ubmaviationnews.com After American Airlines executives met with Mark Funkhouser, mayor of Kansas City, yesterday (October 27), it seems likely that the carrier has made the long-anticipated decision to close its overhaul base in Missouri. In February 2009, Thomas Horton, American's CFO, questioned whether the company would retain its three heavy-maintenance facilities in the future, as it then planned to reduce its fleet of approximately 615 aircraft by 100. With approximately 500 employees, the former TWA base in Kansas City, which American took over in 2001, is much smaller than the facilities in Tulsa (7,000), Oklahoma, and Forth Worth (2,200), Texas. Furthermore, capacity at the Tulsa base has just been expanded, when the carrier opened a new 80,000ft2 (7,500m2) hangar for widebody aircraft in September 2009. |
