TITAL: titanium casting production could be streamlined

TITAL, a German titanium and aluminum investment casting manufacturer, said it was able to prove with a pilot batch that beta annealing as a special heat treatment for titanium investment castings was "probably" not necessary. The company takes up an adverse stance against prevailing requirements of the aerospace industry to ensure improved material properties, especially regarding fracture toughness and crack propagation. If beta annealing were to be avoided, considerable costs could be saved, according to the company that has teamed up with Airbus to further verify the findings.
