Conklin & de Decker has developed a new CO2 Calculator for business aviation aircraft.

This Microsoft Excel-based calculator provides estimated carbon offset costs by aircraft make and model. It allows the user to select the aircraft type, make and model, hours flown per year and then populates fuel consumption while providing CO2 emissions and offset costs per year. It also breaks down the annual CO2 offset by hour, trip and seat. The data is calculated for over 350 business jets, turboprops, helicopters, and piston airplanes.

In addition, the Conklin & de Decker Aircraft Cost Evaluator and Life Cycle Cost products feature a CO2 emissions cost per hour calculation.

The European Union (EU) has already adopted legislation that will require carbon offset payments beginning in 2012. The cost of carbon offsets range from about $15 to about $40 per metric tonne of CO2 and average about $20 per metric tonne. "The impact of these offsets on the cost of operation for an aircraft is relatively small - averaging about $0.20 per gallon," stated Bill de Decker, President of Conklin & de Decker. "Thus, for a business jet flying 400 hours per year, our newly developed CO2 Calculator shows that the total annual cost of buying carbon offsets will range from $10,000 for a small CJ1 class aircraft to $35,000 for a G550 type aircraft", added de Decker.
