Aviation News Item: 00108 19th Nov 2009 Embraer, GE, Azul and Amyris to test biofuel Source: ubmaviationnews.com Embraer, General Electric (GE) and California-based biotechnology company Amyris have signed a MoU to evaluate Amyris' 'No Compromise' renewable jet fuel and, possibly, to undertake a demonstration flight by early 2012 using an E-Jet of Brazil's Azul Linhas Aereas. Amyris' biofuel is made from existing sugar cane feedstock and "is positioned to bring supply security, renewable content, price stability, and significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions to the jet fuel pool", according to the company. This fuel has undergone previous testing conducted by the US Air Force Research Laboratory, Southwest Research Institute, GE Aviation and other industry participants. The Brazilian government (via Financiadora de Estudos e Projetos - FINEP) is already contributing funding to Amyris' renewable jet fuel development programme. Brazil has the world's largest crop of sugar cane and associated expertise in ethanol production. |
