Aviation News Item: 00104 20th Nov 2009 Air Berlin gains LBA approval for GLS approaches Source: ubmaviationnews.com Germany's federal aviation office (LBA) has approved Air Berlin to employ global position landing system (GLS) technology for category 1 approaches - decision height 200ft (61m), visibility no less than 800m (2,625 ft) or a runway visual range no less than 550m (1,800ft). GLS makes precise approaches and pinpoint landings a greater possibility than with the conventional instrument landing system (ILS), which is based on radio signals and susceptible to poor weather conditions or obstacles. The satellite-based system should make approaches more efficient, quiet and offer cost-savings. All 737-700 and -800 aircraft delivered to Air Berlin since June 2007 have been equipped with the system. |
